A Nicholasville police officer suffered minor injuries, including a mild concussion, after being hit by a full-sized pickup truck while on bike patrol Thursday around 9:45 p.m.
According to Sgt. Scott Harvey, Officer Gil Rendon was on bike patrol with another officer when the pickup hit him.
“A truck turning left from Garden Park (Drive) onto Rebel (Road) cut the corner too short and ended up hitting him with the driver’s front headlight of his truck,” Harvey said. “He’s got some cuts and bruises; he lost a tooth in the accident, and we heard this morning that he got a mild concussion out of it.”
The NPD is investigating the accident, and Harvey was unsure if the driver of the truck would be charged with anything.
“Not that we know of right now,” he said. “The only thing he might get, and it’s just my opinion, he may get improper turning, but that’s up to the guys doing the accident report. But he (driver) stopped immediately, and he was obviously upset.”
Harvey said the NPD has 10-12 officers certified for bike patrol and each officer has reflective tape on the bikes and their bags.
He was unsure when Rendon would return to duty.
“Right now, we don’t know,” Harvey said. “With a concussion, it may be a couple weeks, but we’ll give him as much time as he needs to recover.” READ MORE....
